Emergency Hospital of Bucharest (Spitalul Clinic de Urgenta, SCUB) is considered today as the most important emergency hospital in Bucharest.
The hospital facilities cover most of the medical and surgical specialties. The medical imaging and laboratory departments have all the modern equipment for x-ray, CT, MRI, fibroscopy and angiography investigations, to cover all needs of an emergency hospital.
The huge number of admitted patients (almost 50,000 every year), the complexity and gravity of the resolved cases make SCUB a reference hospital in Romania.
The Cardiology and Internal Medicine Department of SCUB is one of the most active in the hospital.
A large number of patients are admitted every year (about 5000), covering the whole spectrum of cardiovascular pathology.
About 1500 patients with acute coronary syndromes, of whom more than 600 with ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction are treated here each year.
In 2005, the Cardiology Department of SCUB has received recognition from the Minister of Research and Development as " Center of Excellency for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cardiovascular Emergencies".
The Cardiology Department includes the following units, all with modern cardiovascular equipment:
- Coronary monitoring unit;
- Coronary intensive care unit;
- Cardiac catheterization laboratory;
- Electrophysiology laboratory;
- Access to nuclear medical unit in a different hospital;
- Echocardiography laboratory;
- Stress test and Holter laboratory.

The medical personal of the Cardiology Department is nationally and internationally aknowledged:
- 19 researchers and research fellows and 12 academic staff with the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Bucharest;
- 6 Fellows of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC);
- 1 Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC);
- 4 European Cardiologists;
- 2 European Certification in Echocardiography ;
- 1 European Certification in Nuclear Cardiology (Certification Board in Nuclear Cardiology);
- 1 European Certification in Electrophysiology.
The Cardiology department has been involved in the last years in many national and international research projects. Some of them are listed below:
- „Stem-Cell Therapy for Cardiovascular and Vascular Reconstruction” (ANGIOSTEM) –VIASAN – CNCSIS Excellency Project no. 44 /2005;
- „Alteration of Cellular, Molecular and Genetic Expression Mechanisms in Cardiovascular Diseases, Diabetes and Obesity – a New Danger for Population’s Health” (AMCADO) – 2005-2008, Excellency project, no.22/2005

- “Integrated System for the Increase of Quality of Life Through Distance ECG Monitoring and Parameter Analysis to Adjust to the European Union Standards”, RELANSIN Project, 2004
Other trials are multicenter ranomized drug intervention trials, phases II and III, some of them finished, other in course, in which the Cardiology Department has particopated during the lats 10 years: AMISTAD I and II, HERO, SENIORS, BRAVO, SIMPHONY, OUVERTURE, ExTRACT-TIMI25 (for which Prof. Dorobantu has been the National Investigator), BEAUTIFUL, FINESSE, aso. The Cardiology Department is also involved in editing monographies, books and articles in the field of clinical Cardiology. Some of these works have been awarded medical and scientific prizes, the most important being the “ Iuliu Hateganu ” Award of the Romanian Academy of Sciences, for the best medical book of the year , won in 2005 by Prof. Maria Dorobantu for the monography “ Actualities in the Acute Myocardial Infarction”, with co-authors from the Cardiology department of SCUB and also from abroad.
